Editors' ReviewDownload.com staffOctober 13, 2019Rdex is the digital version of the old-fashioned Rolodex, but you can use it to save any type of text information you want, not just contact information. You can quickly and easily create multiple card files that will hold multiple cards in each. If you're looking for an easy way to save addresses, notes, and other text without learning a complicated program, Rdex is a good option.Installation is quick and painless with Rdex and the program opens with a ReadMe text file that explains how to use the program. The interface is basic and has only a File menu and a toolbar over a Notepad-style editing window. The options are limited, but this is a bonus since you won't need to spend much time familiarizing yourself with how to navigate and use the program. Nearly everything is self-explanatory but you will need to be clear on the difference between adding a new card file and adding a new card. The first creates a new database, while the second adds a new card to an existing database. You should name each card file with something distinctive, like addresses or recipes, so you know which one to open. You don't name the individual cards, but there's a search field where you can enter text and it will quickly show you the first card in the card file with that text in it. You can then scroll through any other cards with same text using the Next or Previous options in the Card menu. The ReadMe file also gives you a list of shortcuts to perform all the main functions. Card files are saved to your main Documents folder by default, so you also may want to create a specific folder for your cards. Once you use the Save As option for the first one, subsequent cards will automatically be saved to this folder. You can format the text somewhat by changing the font and its size as well as by applying basic formatting such as bold or italics, but that's the extent of the options. Rdex also supports cutting and pasting text directly into a card, so you can save some time over manually typing data.Even if you're too young to remember what an actual Rolodex looks like, you'll still appreciate the benefits of Rdex. There's basically no learning curve with this free program and you can save nearly any type of text information you like. It's recommended for any user who wants to put an end to notes on scraps of paper and go digital.
