No. 15 Kentucky found itself trailing in the fourth quarter at Memorial Stadium before a two-touchdown closing burst sent the Wildcats home with a 21-13 win over Oklahoma.
Kentucky improved to 6-1 with the comeback, while Oklahoma fell to 3-3 in front of 83,218 in Norman. The Sooners led for most of the afternoon but couldn’t hold on down the stretch against a Wildcats defense that forced three second-half turnovers.
Kenny Minchey found Willie Rodriguez for a 2-yard touchdown pass early in the first quarter to give Kentucky an early 7-0 lead, but Oklahoma answered before halftime. Tate Sandell connected on a 44-yard field goal late in the first, and John Mateer hit Rocky Beers for a 20-yard touchdown with 30 seconds left in the second quarter to put the Sooners up 10-7 at the break. Sandell added a 26-yard field goal in the third quarter to extend Oklahoma’s lead to 13-7. But Minchey and Rodriguez connected again, this time from 12 yards out, to put Kentucky back on top 14-13 with 12:53 remaining. Jordan Castell sealed it for the Wildcats with a 41-yard interception return for a touchdown with 1:17 left, capping the scoring at 21-13. Mateer finished 24-of-40 for 270 yards and a touchdown but threw three interceptions, while Manny Choice led Oklahoma’s receivers with 98 yards on five catches. Minchey went 21-of-28 for 158 yards and two touchdowns for Kentucky, and Grant Godfrey anchored the Wildcats’ defense with 15 tackles.
Kentucky returns home to host Vanderbilt on October 24, while Oklahoma travels to face Mississippi State the same day.
