Seattle Reign FC defeated Chicago Stars FC, 3-1, on the back of a brace from Maddie Mercado and chip in from Nerilia Mondesir.
Mercado put Seattle in front in the 38th minute when Jess Fishlock chipped a beautiful ball over the top that Mercado latched onto and pushed past Chicago goalkeeper Halle Mackiewicz. However, it was a flurry of late goals that ramped up the drama at the end.
First, Nerilia Mondesir produced a fine finish from close in to double Seattle’s lead. Then, four minutes later, Mercado got on the end of a Brittany Ratcliffe cross to make it 3-0 to the visitors. Just before stoppage time, though, Chicago’s Simone Charley opened her account with a powerful finish to beat Seattle goalkeeper Claudia Dickey and give her side one goal to show.
