No. 14 Tennessee sent No. 6 Alabama to its second straight loss Saturday, and DeSean Bishop was the reason why, grinding out 159 yards and two touchdowns on 32 carries at Neyland Stadium.
The Volunteers rolled past the Crimson Tide 26-10 in front of 101,915 in Knoxville, improving to 6-1 while Alabama dropped to 5-2.
Tennessee controlled the game from the opening whistle, with Cooper Ranvier splitting the uprights three times in the first quarter alone — from 29, 33 and 41 yards — to stake the Volunteers to a 9-0 lead before Alabama ran a play that mattered. Keelon Russell got the Crimson Tide on the board with a 19-yard touchdown run early in the second quarter, but Ranvier answered with his fourth field goal of the night, a 34-yarder, to push the margin back to five. Conor Talty’s 42-yard field goal as time expired in the half trimmed it to 12-10 at the break. Bishop took over from there, punching in a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter and adding another from the same distance in the fourth to put the game away. George MacIntyre finished 21 of 31 for 197 yards through the air, with Mike Matthews hauling in seven catches for 85 yards. On defense, Jeremiah Telander recorded two sacks and Amare Campbell led the Volunteers with eight tackles. Russell threw for 147 yards but was intercepted twice, and Caleb Woodson paced Alabama with 11 tackles in the loss.
Tennessee travels to South Carolina next Saturday, while Alabama returns home to host Texas A&M the same day.
