Tramell Jones Jr. made his first career start at quarterback for Florida and threw two touchdown passes to Lacota Dippre, steadying a Gators offense that trailed by 14 on the road against a top-10 opponent.
Florida rallied past No. 7 Texas 27-24 at DKR-Texas Memorial Stadium in Austin, handing the Longhorns their second straight loss and improving to 5-2. Texas fell to 4-2.
Texas controlled the first quarter, with Ryan Brown breaking a 32-yard touchdown run and Garret Spetic adding a 38-yard field goal to make it 10-0. The margin grew to 17-3 in the second quarter when Texas turned a short punt into points, as Ryan Niblett returned a 48-yard punt 63 yards for a touchdown. Florida answered before halftime, with Philip Durkin kicking a 45-yard field goal and Jones finding Dippre for a 7-yard score to cut it to 17-10 at the break. Jones and Dippre connected again in the third quarter, an 8-yard touchdown that tied the game at 17. Durkin’s 28-yard field goal put Florida ahead early in the fourth, and Jadan Baugh capped the Gators’ surge with an 11-yard touchdown run, part of a 25-carry, 91-yard afternoon, to make it 27-17. Texas quarterback Arch Manning, who finished 14-of-20 for 173 yards, found Ryan Coleman for a 9-yard touchdown with 4:21 left to draw within 27-24, but Florida’s defense closed it out. Jones completed 22 of 35 passes for 155 yards and two scores, while Eric Singleton Jr. led Gators receivers with seven catches for 43 yards. LJ McCray recorded 1.5 sacks for Florida, and Texas linebacker Justin Cryer led all tacklers with 11.
Texas hosts Ole Miss next on October 24, while Florida travels to face Georgia on October 31.
