Alex McPherson drilled a 34-yard field goal as time expired, and Auburn walked out of Sanford Stadium with a stunner that no scoreboard operator in Athens wanted to update.
The Tigers edged No. 1 Georgia 27-24 on Saturday in front of 93,033, knocking off the nation’s top-ranked team on the road and sending the Bulldogs to 6-1. Auburn improved to 4-2.
Georgia came out fast, with Dwight Phillips Jr. scoring on a 15-yard run and Gunner Stockton finding Lawson Luckie for a 24-yard touchdown to make it 14-0 early. Auburn answered before the first quarter ended when Christian Neptune hit Keshaun Singleton for a 24-yard score, then tied it in the second quarter on Byrum Brown’s 9-yard touchdown pass to Chas Nimrod. McPherson’s 49-yard field goal with 1:20 left in the half put the Tigers up 17-14 at the break. Brown added a 5-yard touchdown run in the third quarter to push the lead to 24-14, capping a night in which he carried 26 times for 115 yards in addition to his passing numbers. Georgia clawed back in the fourth, with Peyton Woodring’s 42-yard field goal cutting the margin to 24-17 before Stockton connected with London Humphreys from 4 yards out to tie it at 24 with 2:58 remaining. That set up McPherson’s game-winner as the clock hit zero. Stockton finished 22 of 34 for 272 yards with two touchdowns and two interceptions, and Craig Dandridge caught four passes for 88 yards in the loss. Auburn’s Elijah Melendez paced the defense with nine tackles and a sack.
Georgia hosts Florida on Oct. 31, while Auburn returns home to face LSU on Oct. 24.
