Tate Sandell drilled a 47-yard field goal as time expired, and Oklahoma stunned No. 1 Texas in the Red River rivalry despite managing just 155 yards through the air.
The Sooners edged the Longhorns 27-24 at the Cotton Bowl in Dallas, a result that leaned on special teams and defense rather than the offense to topple the nation’s top-ranked team.
Texas struck first when Arch Manning found Cam Coleman for a 41-yard touchdown in the opening quarter, and the Longhorns built what looked like control of the rivalry game. Oklahoma answered when Dasan McCullough blocked a punt that Danny Okoye recovered — the play sheet credits D. Fields with the recovery for a touchdown — knotting things at 7-7 before Manning hit R. Wingo from 34 yards to put Texas back in front. A Gunnar Spetic field goal made it 17-7 at the half. Sandell got Oklahoma moving in the third quarter with a 53-yarder, then Lloyd Avant punched in a 2-yard touchdown run early in the fourth to tie the game at 17. The Sooners defense delivered the biggest blow of the night when P. Bowen returned a Manning interception 42 yards for a touchdown, but Manning answered again, finding J. Bishop Jr. for a 15-yard score to tie it at 24 with 6:32 left. That set up Sandell, who calmly drilled the game-winner from 47 yards as the clock hit zero. Manning finished 19 of 31 for 260 yards and three touchdowns but threw two costly interceptions, while Coleman led all receivers with 110 yards on five catches. Oklahoma’s John Mateer completed 18 of 26 passes for 155 yards, and Avant added 72 rushing yards on just 10 carries to go with his touchdown.
Oklahoma, now 3-2, hosts Kentucky next Saturday. Texas, still 4-1 despite the setback, returns home to face Florida.
